Overview Core Treatment Team Field Staff Program Coordinators

PROGRAM COORDINATORS

Program Coordinators serve one of the most important functions of the Odyssey Treatment Team—ensuring that courses are safe and run smoothly. Odyssey’s Coordinator department is a close nit team of competent individuals who care deeply about providing the best field experience possible for your child.

EARL BROCKMAN — Academics Director

After serving as principal and teacher for over forty years, Earl is inspired by the challenge of integrating the highest standards of education with Odyssey's therapeutic curriculum to create a compelling learning environment for students. In addition to his service in multiple schools, Earl has also served on a variety of local and Northwest educational councils and boards and has been an "Invited Observer" to the Washington State Board of Education. Having received many awards throughout his teaching career, including the Don Keele Excellence in Education Award, the Zapara Award of Recognition for Excellence in Teaching, and the Who's Who Among American Teachers, Earl is an honored member of the educational community. As a result of this extensive experience, Earl is able to help Odyssey students master subject content and arouse or regain their joy of learning by using a variety of innovative teaching techniques.

ABBY HADE TERPSTRA — Logistics Coordinator

After earning her degree in Outdoor Education, Abby spent time teaching Environmental Education in the Midwest and Northeast before moving to Washington. As a logistics coordinator for Odyssey, Abby combines her interest in outdoor pursuits, education, and nutrition to develop and maintain high quality standards for meeting the dietary, equipment, and outfitting needs of Odyssey staff and clients. Abby enjoys keeping groups outfitted and equipped appropriately for camping and traveling in the environments of the Pacific Northwest.

With an extensive background in working with teenagers challenged by life circumstances, his mission is to serve young people in their efforts to be whole and healthy. Kris’ core values include truth, honesty, loyalty, integrity, honor and respect.

Having navigated rough waters himself as a teenager, Kris possesses great insight and understanding of issues facing today’s youth. His experiences have powerfully informed and prepared him for his work as a juvenile transport specialist and consultant. In 2000, Kris founded a juvenile transport company and successfully transported teens to and from boarding schools and programs in Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, and throughout the United States. Well respected in the juvenile transport field for his experience and expertise, Kris is pleased to be part of Odyssey Wilderness Programs’ professional team.

PHILLIP BAILEY — Field Manager

Phil discovered his commitment to working with special population adolescents in 1985, when he was a house parent for a residential rehabilitation center in rural Pennsylvania. Since then, he has developed his experience in the field through leading courses in a variety of outdoor settings, as well as by pursuing training in wilderness medicine, risk management, rock climbing site management, paddling and water rescue skills. By the mid nineties Phil was leading extended wilderness expeditions all over the country with adjudicated students and has been a full time wilderness professional since. His professional experience includes trip leading for Aspen Achievement Academy, Great Escapes, and the Wilderness Outdoor Leadership Foundation (WOLF). Most recently, Phil fulfilled the positions of Staff Trainer and Associate Program Director for several Outward Bound schools.

As the Field Manager for Odyssey, Phil devotes himself to hiring, training, and retaining qualified and committed field instructors and to helping staff implement the most current and effective safety and group management protocols on their courses. Phil is available 24/7 to respond to emergency needs in the field and provides a constant safety net for Odyssey staff and students. When not spending quality time in the wilderness with students or training staff, Phil enjoys mountain biking, rock climbing, and kayaking.
